Yesterday, we posted about the new MacBook Pro’s removal of the iconic startup chime.
Pingie.com, the site that posted the original note, followed up with another post showing how to restore the startup chime.
In a nutshell, go into Terminal and enter this line:
sudo nvram BootAudio=%01
Good to know.
Any way to turn it off on older Macs?
You inspired me to try sudo nvram BootAudio=%00, but no love. 🙂
Note: this does NOT work on a brand-new MacBook Pro Retina 13″, the one without the Touch Bar (ie. the only one available right now). I repeat: those Terminal commands do absolutely zilch, nada, nothing.
In summary, the non-illuminated Apple Logo, the non-existent boot chime, the missing power extension cord (it’s just the adapter, a duckhead and a USB-C cable in the box), together with the fact that the MBP gives audible feedback when connected to a charger… all these things bring the new MacBook Pros closer to an iPad than to what we used to know as MacBooks Pros.
Granted, the speed of the flash drive is truly insane. The screen is wonderful. The new audio setup really does sound better. But we’re not here to be happy, are we. 🙂

I did futz around for about 12 second and found a few hacks for older Macs. Haven’t tried any of them yet.
