Pingie.com:
Hidden in a tech note for the new MacBook Pros is a death notice of the infamous Mac startup chime. (Update: It is more then confirmed as I own the laptop. There is no chime.)
Here’s a link to an archive of all the Mac startup/crash sounds. Click the link, open the zip file, use Quick Look to listen to each of the sounds. How many of these do you recognize?
Why?
Yes, why? The chime helps to know when to press option for dual boot.
Right? I’ll miss the chime in a big way.
I basically get it, though. Apple’s been steadily marching toward “always on”, but it seems to me a case can be made either way.
I did, on a couple of OS8-era Macs. Eesh.
I tend to silence the startup chime if I’m going to be traveling with a MacBook. Especially if I’ll be working in a public place with it.

Now, if there was only a way to get my HappyMac boot up icon back… (No time to Google for that right now… 🙂 )
I don’t like the start up chime, it’s obnoxious (because it’s so damn loud). In the follow up post about turning the sound back on, there’s a command to turn it off! Here’s to hoping it works on older Macs too… just set it, fingers crossed for a silent restart next time I reboot!
