Is Apple locking iPhone batteries to discourage repair?

Headlines have been flying around the internet similar to this one:

“Apple Is Locking iPhone Batteries to Discourage Repair”

As I read through the various articles on this issue, I remained pretty convinced that Apple was not specifically trying to discourage repair. There had to be more to the logic.

Turns out, there was more to it. And Rene Ritchie did a great job laying out the issues, making this understandable. Still not thrilled with the answer, but I get Apple’s goals here. Watch for yourself.

  1. Anyone who is a Loop follower should also subscribe to Rene Ritchie on Youtube. He is great at analyzing Apple related subjects.

  2. Got my wife’s iPhone 6 battery replaced last year by a local guy who does them all the time and has a great reputation. Nearest Apple store is 250+km away so not really an option.

12 months later the battery is crap. She barely gets thru the morning with just regular use. In fact it’s been rubbish for about 6 months. I think its health is already under 90%.

So yep – crap experience using 3rd party repairer who used rubbish parts. But no one thinks of that when she is always plugging in to charge at work etc. They just see an iPhone with poor battery life.
