Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs’ biographer, talks Jony Ive’s departure

Fascinating reminder of just how close Steve and Jony were.

Lots of interesting bits in there, but one quote stood out to me:

I think what you’re seeing now is a company that knows how to execute pretty well. But it doesn’t have at its core these two spiritual soulmates who just lived and breathed the beauty of products.

I believe there are visionaries at Apple today, and with Jony leaving, I think the big shadows cast by Steve and Jony will pass, and new giants will emerge.

Watch the video.

  1. I find it interesting how these Squawk Box talking heads are so poorly qualified to discuss Ive’s departure with Isaacson.

  2. Considering how relatively ill-equipped Isaacson himself was to write about Apple’s technology-decision-making, I’d say they’re all in good company in this video.

  3. Agreed. His “I would do it myself!” bit made me wonder anew what Jobs saw in him.

He lacks serious insight. “Apple should have made a camera. That would have been great.” They did. It’s the most popular camera in the world. It’s called the iPhone.

  4. Agreed. This interview just reconfirmed for me that Isaacson doesn’t really deserve the accolades, at least when it comes to Apple/Jobs, that the media often gives him.

  5. Nah. This guy is a hack. Jobs hired the wrong guy. He lives in New Orleans and I’ve seen him speak at local tech talks — it’s clear he doesn’t know tech. He’s just riding Jobs/Apple’s coattails to stay relevant.

Becoming Steve Jobs was a much better biography, check it out.

  6. Lol. Isaacson is proof that Jobs was not always right.

The guy claims he left these tidbits out of the book out of politeness, and yet goes on television to air these things out years later in a more dramatic fashion, as soon as big news happens that makes these things relevant again.

    What a clown.

  7. It’s not as if Steve Jobs had so much choice. Who would he have chosen instead? Ive doesn’t want to do anything else but be a designer. I bet Phil Schiller wouldn’t have done any better. He knew that Forstall couldn’t do the job, as he wasn’t a team builder. Fadell was out. Besides, Cook did a better job than someone like Balmer ever did. Sure he’s not perfect, but I still don’t see who would could even succeed Tim Cook at this moment.

  8. I can’t believe he worked a quote from Sunset Blvd in there!!! That was amazing, and unintentionally accurate – Jony Ive is totally Norma Desmond!

It’s really beginning to seem like Tim Cook inherited a shit sandwich after following a legend in his prime – ridiculously skeuomorphic UI, a burnt out design lead (20 years in at that point), contracts with Intel, beef with NVIDIA, and worst of all, Eddie fucking Cue.

2019 has been a banner year for Apple. Probably the most exciting in the post-Jobs era. Really looking forward to 2020…
