Tomorrow marks a month since Apple announced its Apple News+ subscription service, which means if you signed up on March 25 following the event, you’re going to start getting charged $9.99 per month.
If you’re not happy with Apple News+ and want to avoid the fee, make sure to cancel today. Here’s how.
I’m thoroughly unimpressed with Apple News and News+ and will be unsubscribing before my first payment is due.
I guess I’m the third major case here: I’m waiting to give them a little time to improve it before I give it a try. 🙂
The “For You” stuff, both for my wife and myself, simply aren’t relevant. I’ve never read People magazine in my life and yet it keeps getting recommended to us. My top three “trending Stories” are from People, TSN, and The Star – three publications I’ve never read. In the iPhone News section, I keep seeing stories from suspect/useless websites. In the News+ Magazine section, I’m seeing headlines and stories from “Today’s Parent” and “Running” magazine. It’s simply too much work to pay $13/month to manage.
Yeah, you have to train it a bit. I block certain publications and it’s also a bit too fast with the “he clicked on a story from X, he must love X!” logic.
Can you click on the Don’t Like button on content you don’t like to train it to not show you that type of content?
I’m throughly impressed with Apple News+. I was already impressed with Apple News.
I thought I’d add why I’m so impressed.
The Apple News stories are totally relevant to me and my family. We trained it to be so by clicking on the heart and the heart with a line through it. New edit: We also trained to not show us content we don’t like by clicking on the don’t like button.
Apple News+ is great because I love so many of the magazines that are included in the service including Wired, Ad Age, People, Entertainment Weekly, Variety, The Atlantic, Time, GQ, Hollywood Reporter, Vanity Fair and more. Those MORE than pay for the $10 a month Apple News+ fee.
Why don’t you like it?

Yes, you can but is the Don’t Like button for the news source? or the story? Or the byline? That’s not made clear. And, even when I do, I still see the Don’t Like articles – just not with a helpful little heart with a slash through it when I refresh this pages….
Apple News+ has been surprisingly useful for me. If nothing else, I get access to articles in the WSJ and the New Yorker. Moreover, if you hit a paywall in Safari iOS, you can hit Share => Open in Apple News, and it’ll pull up the article, free of the paywall. So, finally, I can read WSJ articles others recommend. 🙂
My only concern is there is too much to read, and whether I need that subscription. But I’ll keep it for some time.

My go to source for reading news. It’s free. It’s awesome (especially when you’re using it for quite some time and it has learnt your taste).
It’s like a black hole that once I open it I will be lost on it for hours. For anyone who have a free hour or two every morning or evening News and/or News+ will be great for you actually.
Great. The mechanism instilled by tailoring only things you want to read about makes us more tribal. Confirmation bias is reinforced by this,.
Then there is the question of the content itself. Junk.
If you click the news source in the title when seeing a story, you can see the source itself, and click the don’t like. Boom, it’s gone.
Not a great UI affordance at all, but once you get used to it it’s easy to manage.
I call it reading what I’m interested in.
I don’t call NY Times, Variety, WSJ junk.

I clicked the Don’t LIke button 21 hours ago and, this AM, the story and the source is still there.
Apple News doesn’t invalidate the existing part of your feed, it just prevents it from showing up again in the future. Check in a day or two, it should have more-or-less disappeared.
