My friend had her iPhone XR stolen. She’s just realised that the ‘thief’* has made a video – it’s really short but shows the thief – and it’s been uploaded to her iCloud – is there a way I can pull the location data for a video?
Find my iPhone has been now disabled. So she’s out of options there, just wanted to do something to help if I could.
Read the thread to learn about pulling location data from a video (a number of options, and be aware that anyone can pull location data from your videos, just as they can from a still photo).
I wonder how the thief was able to disable Find My iPhone yet the poster was able to retrieve the video, so still had control of the Apple ID and iCloud account. The story appears to be ongoing.
Perhaps Find my iPhone was not disabled but the thief simply turned Airplane Mode on after the video uploaded. From the owner’s perspective, they could appear the same.
As an aside, six months ago I asked a coworker if I could check out his iPhone X, as I wanted a smaller device than my 7+. I was a bit surprised when he handed it to me and there was no passcode or Face ID. He said he preferred to trust that people would be good. Upon seeing the skeptical look on my face, he then told me stay out of the photos app. I don’t think he had FMIP turned on either. I upgraded to a XS, six digit passcode, Face ID and FMIP enabled.
Yeah, I don’t think you can even turn on FMIP without a passcode.
Color me a cynic, but I’ve never not had a passcode. Even on my Nokia flip phone and the candy bar before it.
you can. the two are not connected. you just can’t turn off FMIP without the password for the account. then again if you are in the phone the user name is probably one of the emails logged into mail so that’s cake.
Last time I tried to turn it on, it insisted I set up a device passcode first. (This is a test device that never leaves my desk, so the passcode isn’t very useful.)
