PSA: Don’t end your Apple News+ trial before the end

Reddit:

So like a lot of people I like to end my trials as soon as I get them because I don’t want to forget to unsubscribe. Every other thing I subscribe to from the App Store I still get to use everything until the end of the trial even if I cancel early.

Well not with Apple News+. I ended the trial expecting to be able to use it for the next 30 days and I did it so fast I didn’t even read that it would actually end.

Yup. Unlike the Apple Music subscription, the Apple News+ subscription ends the second you cancel.

I’ve left a reminder on the 29th day anniversary to consider my options.

  1. I’m not hating it so far. I’ve noticed that all of the news no longer has pay walls. In Canada for reference.

  2. Sorry, just not enthusiastic about the new News+.

Does anyone else think News & News+ type size is too small for the landing pages? I’m not old and I’m not young, but damn, why does it need to be so small on a desktop? Been fussing with it to increase it, no success.

News & News+ really has their work cut-out for them. Functionality is so basic, unpolished and restricted, you’d think this was 2001.

    PAIN POINTS

Content is definitely optimized for iPhone screen. Select a WSj article and go fullscreen. You see the copy in a narrow, iPhone-sized column with huge amounts of negative white space left & right.

Really, ‘command + ]’ to switch pages? why not just ‘left-, right-arrow’?

Magazine ToC are basic without thumbnails, single column, scroll, scroll, scroll, with tons of white space.

Magazine articles have images you click to make large, but you can’t use ‘esc’ key to go back to article, you must select the super-tiny ‘Done” button in upper right.

BTW, if you select image to make large, then select ‘command+[‘ to go back, it takes you to the previous article, but hit ‘command+]’ and it takes you back to your original article with the image now super large and hanging off the page, unable to select it, unable to reset it, unable to use ‘command+r’ for a refresh, unable to scroll article.

If you select a group of images, you can’t keystroke through them, but you can use your Magic Mouse to swipe through them. Again, once you get to the end you must click ‘Done’ or be punished.

I’m tired and unenthused to continue.

  4. I thought there would no longer be ads in News+. Wrong. WSJ article on Apple keyboards issues nowhere to be found. Layouts are still horrible. Long ways to go with this. I’ll wait on future reviews; and to avoid paying even once, canceled.

  6. I was skeptical at first, but $10/month isn’t so bad for WSJ access and a couple of magazines. I may continue past the free trial after all.
