The new Skype for Web client that Microsoft released on Thursday isn’t functional on several browsers, the company confirmed to VentureBeat today. The revamped version of the company’s messaging and video chat client only supports Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome — and Chromium-based browsers such as Vivaldi — but not Apple’s Safari, Mozilla’s Firefox, or Opera.
No real surprise but still a PITA for users who favor those browsers.
What a stupid, limiting throwback to the Microsoft of the 90s and 00s.
This is the danger of one rendering engine (Edge is moving to the Chromium/Blink engine). With multiple engines you need to write to web standards. With one, you can just write to that.
Web standards always meant “different versions for every brower’s bugs or failures”, though.
I wish we lived in a world where “web standards” worked like you describe, especially for something as complicated as realtime video and audio conferencing.
Not really. I mean, yes, bugs exist, it’s software. But things like CSS Grid, etc actually do have standards that work really quite well. I don’t know about video/audio real time stuff but I’d want to know why WebRTC doesn’t work. More to the point, since I can do excellent real time video and audio on Zoom on ANY browser, this reeks of MSFT being lazy.

Chrome is 62% of web sessions last month. 15% Safari, and they DO NOT care about Mac users for obvious reasons; not worth the effort to make a complicated, deeply involved web video engine run on Apple’s browser that only matters on OSX.
Firefox isn’t even 5%, Opera’s not even 3%.
And everyone with either either has or can trivially get Chrome.
Yeah, that was pretty much what my smarter half said about this, too. Still annoying.
Isn’t that quaint. They are supporting a browser that they’ve already said “I think of you in friend category”.
Skype is pox on civilization. Worst product that MS makes.
