The 30th anniversary of the beloved Macintosh SE/30

Nick Punt:

Just want to point out that today is the 30th anniversary of the beloved Macintosh SE/30. Small in stature but huge in performance, expansion, and overall likability. The king of the compact macs, and considered by many to be the Best Mac Ever.

In the 30 years since launch, the SE/30 has become a bit of a cult classic among Mac enthusiasts by virtue of its expandability.

This Twitter thread is great. The Macintosh SE/30 was my first Mac and I absolutely loved it. I don’t know if it’s the “Best Mac Ever” but it certainly is my favourite if only for the path it put me on.

  1. I coveted the SE/30, but my first computer was an SE FDHD, because it was what I could afford at the time.

  2. What made the SE/30 great was how many years it remained useful. I ran one until OS 8.1 and replaced it with a Bondi Blue iMac. Sans hockey puck of course.

  3. My second Mac which I still have. I did add a color card and 13 inch monitor to it. I thought it was so cool then.

  4. Not the best Mac ever, but the best all-in-one until the iMac… and the best desktop Mac form factor until the iMac G5.

Edit: Added “desktop.” Probably obvious. 🙂
