‘Order!’ Why Europeans are turning to John Bercow for light relief in Brexit chaos

Our American readers may not realize this but the role of the Speaker of the House in the British Parliamentary system is significantly different than that of the House of Representatives. They act more as a referee in the chamber than a politician. Most of the time, the Speaker is fairly innocuous but John Bercow is a lot of fun to watch and listen to.

  1. The speaker is never innocuous. They’re always fun to watch. Look up Betty Boothryd and some of the others. They become well know. In this case John Brecon is a Conservative MP. Because he is speaker he never votes so the Conservative majority is technically one less than it should be.

  2. Bercow is a Conservative Member of Parliament, but because he has been elected Speaker, his constituency is not contested by the main parties, which means he is guaranteed to be elected at every general election.
But Bercow was nominated by a Labour Governmemt. And a lot of Conservatives don’t like him believing he is biased against them.
There is no evidence to support bias, but his own party do not like him.
