Apple says the iPhone XR has been its top-selling iPhone since launch

CNET:

Apple’s iPhone XR has been outselling the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max every day since the cheaper, colorful phone hit the market last month.

Greg Joswiak, Apple vice president of product marketing, told CNET in an interview Wednesday that the device has “been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available.”

Wait. That can’t be true. All the pundits are telling us it’s a flop and that Apple will be out of business by next spring. I don’t know who to believe anymore.

  1. Well, both could be true at the same time. 🙂 The XR could be selling better than the XS and XS Max, and all three could be less than the X, for example. (In fact, I suspect it’s likely; the X had huge pent-up demand.)

    But:

    1. Drawing any meaningful conclusions from supply chain is a fool’s errand;
    2. Sure, they might sell less. If anything, Apple likely expects it, and is one reason why they’ve changed their breakout details to focus on revenues from users, not the number of units moved.

I finally stopped by an Apple Store last weekend and looked at the XR. It’s really nice. The bezels are larger, but they’re fine. If I hadn’t bought the X last December, I’d definitely get the XR now, it would easily handle all of my needs.

In particular, the $799 SKU with 128GB is a great deal by Apple standards—only $50 more than the base SKU and 128GB is a nice sweet spot. I’m amazed the XS has no equivalent thing. It’s 64GB => 256GB, and the attendant $150 hike is painful.

  2. That doesn‘t mean it‘s selling well, though. Still, they won‘t be going out of business because they sell a few iphones less 🙂

  3. I have a red XR (128GB) and I really like it. It’s an upgrade from my 7 and I’m still adjusting to the size. I can’t fault it really, although I don’t understand why there aren’t any Apple cases for it.

  4. I was wondering, have they made cases for previous colour iPhones? Maybe they just feel these phones should be carried without a case.

  5. I don’t think the colour is relevant. The 7 was available in black, grey, gold, and red. I had a black one in a black case, a friend had a gold one in a brown case (don’t ask, seriously), both made by Apple.

They’re still selling cases for the 7 in the store.

  6. Last year, Apple said the same about the iPhone X. Had they said last year that the iPhone 8 was the best selling iPhone every day since its introduction, the stock would have dropped 200%.

Also, yeah…some iPhone has to be the best-selling iPhone. Saying which one it is doesn’t give any indication that it’s doing better or worse than its predecessors. It’s an empty statement.

  7. Stock analysts who leave the industry usually end top working in massage parlors, given the similar skill sets involved.

  8. I rationalize the amount of stupidity published under the guise of stock analysis like so: the people writing bullshit about Apple are not actually attempting to predict how the company is faring or will soon fare. Nor are they attempting to do business journalism. They are instead attempting to manipulate the stock price of of Apple so they or their backers can make more money.

  9. Yeah, they’ve done leather and silicone cases for past iPhones. Plus those hole-punched cases for the 5C.
