Woz on Apple

To me, Woz and Steve Jobs were the yin and yang at the root of the Apple tree. They were very different people, each with his own flaws and particular brand of genius.

Steve being gone makes me appreciate Woz all the more.

  1. He ain’t trolling Apple in this clip. He actually cites the difference between “feature” and “innovation” in Apple’s favor.

But, yeah. He’s a bit of a noodle whose pertinence for tech commentary is more nostalgic than current.

  2. Why? In every story like this Woz proves himself to have no idea about what is going on in technology, and zero ability for product. He was a talented hardware engineer in the ’70s, and that was about it. Since then he has lived on his AAPL stock while publicly trolling Apple. He’s unfortunately entirely no longer relevant.

He criticizes Tesla and autonomous driving because of the small number of deaths, and the Tesla guy was the fault of the driver watching a movie in his Tesla while on auto-pilot. Deaths happen. In the transition of roads from people & carts & wagons to automobiles, a lot more people died. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have done it tho.

  3. I’m not referring to this clip (which was more about autonomous cars and Tesla), but in general. Woz makes a seemingly annual media show of poopooing Apple (where I believe he still collects a salary in addition to his stocks, making them his employer). Yet his POV is always one of neckbeard tech-enthusiast — which is not and has never been Apple’s market. He continually shows he still doesn’t get what makes Apple products great.

  4. When interviewed, he does go on at length about the engineering side, but he also talks about the humane intent behind the design of the original products. At least when he gets around to it. He meanders a bit.
