iPhone XR: The reviews are in

Scroll through Apple’s iPhone XR quote gallery. Can’t remember the last time an Apple product has been so positively received and recommended.

  1. So, I have an XS Max. I like the phone, it’s a huge upgrade over my 6S Plus. But one thing Apple may have done here is to convince me never to buy the top end of things again. If the Xr is so close to the XS/XS Max, it feels a little bit like I got ripped off for the price difference. Mind you, I knew the XR was going to be close and it’s my fault if there’s fault to be had ( I could have waited) but there’s a discrepancy between the price and performance from the sound of it.

  2. Yes, this is pretty interesting. I would guess the main differentiators would be OLED vs. LCD and the zoom lens. There are other differences in materials, and 3D Touch. But overall I guess that’s the general question: is the OLED screen worth the extra $250ish? Is the lens? Is the smaller form factor? Some combination? Very interesting indeed.

I can only remember a couple of instances where Apple introduced two new phones in different lines before: 5S/5c (if you consider the 5c a “different line”), and X/8. In each case it seemed like the consensus was that the cheaper phone would outsell the more expensive one, because that’s what everyone wants, right? The cheapest thing. But in both cases, Apple claims not only that the more expensive phone outsold the the less expensive one, but that it wasn’t even close. But in both of those cases, the value proposition is clear: there were a bunch of things you were getting for the extra money.

This time? If the Xr outsells the XS…that will be a first that I can remember.

  3. And prior to this, the less expensive phone had real compromises. The 5C was the previous generation guts (from the 5) and the 8/8+ was very different from the X. So, I think people tended to say to themselves “Well If I’m getting a new phone I would rather have the most up to date one”

The XR compromises are the display, the case material and the camera. Same internals. etc. So, this time if someone say to themselves ” I want the most up-to-date phone”, that can be the XR from a capability standpoint.

  4. “The XR compromises are the display, the case material and the camera.”

The LCD screen is less power hungry, which means better battery life. Aluminum case = lighter weight. And Having just one camera means wider angle and better low light performance for portrait mode.

So in every case, the XR is not worse, instead it just chooses a different set of trade offs. And those trade offs also happen to make it significantly less expensive. If I was looking to buy a huge phone, I’d choose the XR in a heartbeat.
