Minecraft for Apple TV discontinued due to lack of players

Gaming on Apple TV seemed to have such potential. Now it seems like a ghost town.

  1. If apple made an official controller and bundled that with the Apple TV, it could’ve really taken off. They have the money to attract top level game companies. The iPhone & iPad are both powerful enough to do high end games. Having a cross compatible home system to go with those would be a compelling ecosystem for gamers, especially with a wireless controller that can auto pair with whichever device you’re using at the time.

  2. Apple is in a good position to become a player in the gaming space outside iOS if they want, but they’ll need to put some real resources into it. Creating an internal gaming studio to develop exclusive games is probably a critical step to get initial traction and demonstrate to other developers what is possible.

  3. When the new Apple TV was launched, I really thought Apple was poised to take a big chunk out of the console market. The App Store, the huge number of iOS game developers, the A8, Metal…

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

  4. Who thought it had potential?
I mean, it might have, if Apple had shipped gaming hardware or cared about it, sure.

The remote itself is useless for anything resembling actual gaming, and Apple had, AFAIK, no in-house game controller.

(A bundle would be nice, but not necessary. An Apple-branded controller, or well-marketed-and-labeled third-party ones would do.

But that didn’t really happen, not the “well-marketed” part.)

  5. Um… when did Apple TV ever present itself as a viable game platform? Outside of the tech-blog reiterati, I mean?

  6. I loved the AppleTV version, but it was hard to get too excited about it since it couldn’t play with the other platforms.

I guess now I know when the compatibility update will come: Never. 🙂
