Folk, new wave, hip-hop, R&B, rap-rock, heavy metal and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll are among the many genres (and subgenres) represented by the latest shortlist of nominees for induction into the ever-broadening Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Stevie Nicks (already an inductee as a member of Fleetwood Mac), Def Leppard, John Prine, Roxy Music, Devo and Todd Rundgren are the first-time nominees for the 2019 class, it was announced on Tuesday, joining a more diverse selection of returning acts who have not been inducted, including Janet Jackson, Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine.
I love when these nominations come out because it provokes huge arguments between myself and The Publisher of The Loop on the Your Mac Life show.
It took Todd this long to get nominated? what a sham!
Devo? Not Depeche Mode, Joy Division, or the Smiths? They picked bloody Devo?
Devo doesn’t *not* deserve to be on the list just because you think someone else *does*. Personally, I think Devo is more iconic and more memorable than the 3 you’ve named, but that might just be because I was listening to different kinds of music and didn’t get a chance to appreciate them, Nevertheless, Devo definitely should be in the Hall of Fame. They didn’t have a bunch of songs I thought were great, but for a time the trajectory of music bent under their influence. Def Leppard on the other hand, I thought had a lot more great songs. So I’m happy they’re in too.
Eligible since 1995. I wonder why it’s taken so long.
