Oddly satisfying videos

These videos really click for me. There’s a sense of the real world about these objects, a sense of gravity-obeying mass.

Here’s the first one, called Pendulum vs Marble:

  1. Looks like computer graphics to me. Passing through the hoop, the marble should have a bit of that lateral motion imparted to the marble. Nope. Nothing. Forgetting the waxen wood texture and all… the physics isn’t right. Also notice the marble at the top of the arc. It never goes down. There’s apparently no friction.

  2. are you guys for real? yes, of course they are computer animations. obviously they’re animations and not real. that isn’t the point.

as for the marble passing thru the ring, the ring would not impart lateral motion to the marble if the opening of the ring is wide enough that the marble passed thru it without touching the ring. this would require impossible timing, but that is what makes watching the video fun.

  3. Sorry, but it seemed to be presented as a real thing. And the guy I was replying to asked the question. You are, however, quite wrong about the last part. The marble does not jump as it passes through the gap. It’s lower surface must be in contact with the ring as it goes through the gap. The ring can’t be slightly below the path such that the marble doesn’t touch it. The reason is obvious. Without a slight upward ramp just before the gap, the marble would fall very slightly before reaching the other side, and therefore in one direction or another, there would be an impact of the marble against the far edge. We’d see the effect of a slight ramp, and it’s not present. Therefore the ring provides contact and a rolling surface, the lateral motion of which would be imparted to the marble, even if only slightly.
