California’s top law enforcement official, Attorney General Xavier Becerra, announced Thursday that police had busted a robbery ring that hit Apple Store locations across 19 counties. Seventeen people have been indicted over the scheme to steal more than $1 million in Apple products from stores in Butte County in the north of the state to San Diego County in the south.
The hoodie-wearing gang seemed to engage in simple tactics: literally walk in, brandish no weapons, grab electronics, and run out.
At what point does Apple revise its store in order to stop this kind of theft or whether they just see this as the cost of doing business the way they do? My biggest fear is that someone, staff or customer, gets hurt or worse in one of these smash and grabs.
Over $1 million? For Apple?
I have no doubt that staff are instructed to, “not be a hero.” As in, staying out of the way. It’s what insurance is for. As a bar manager, it’s certainly what I told my staff, and our profit margins were nowhere near as large.
One assumes that this will die off on its own as the sort of people who’d consider it learn two things:
1) Apple has very good cameras and they’re likely to get caught. (The link talks about lots of arrests, after all.)
2) Stolen display items are essentially worthless despite their notional retail value, since they deactivate; there’s a finite and relatively hard to reach pool of people who’ll buy a stolen iWhatever that they can’t turn on and see work first.
(I’m assuming, that is, that the deactivation is of a sort that is relatively obvious; that’s my impression but I don’t recall the details.
Apple would be more foolish than expected for it to not be.)
At what point do California residents quit “educating” their kids to be criminals?
Can you explain what that means? That is, as opposed to what residents of other states do?
I know it’s fashionable for conservatives to hate California for reasons like having eliminated its budget deficit, but I’d like to know how that state specifically does what you said.
“Designing” their stores against theft is the absolute wrong thing to do. The stores will be robbed regardless, as the stores have high value items. Can’t let a minority of bad guys ruin it for the rest of us. Apple is focused in the rest of us, not the 5% of scumbags. Should Apple stores become banks with bomb proof vaults?

What concern is that – that someone will get hurt? People get hurt by robbers not carrying weapons all the time. I think it’s still a valid concern.
As governor, he didn’t seem to enjoy dissent from that state’s younger people. I remember his McCarthy-era rhetoric getting quite a workout. He sure talked tough for someone who’d done desk jobs during WWII.
