You can use two cellular plans with your iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max, a nano-SIM, and an eSIM. An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM. Here’s how to set up and use a cellular plan using an eSIM.

Side note: The new iPhone branding is all over the place. In this post, it’s “Xs”. On Apple’s front page, it’s “X?”, and on a variety of other pages, it’s “XS”. I think Apple is going for “X?” and, if typing the s-in-a-square is not practical, “Xs”. I suspect the “XS” was inadvertent and will slowly disappear.
I sure hope next year they drop these names.
Buying options for the Xr omit the “buy without a carrier” unlocked one. I wonder why.
The XR is the key to your quest. If you look at the style of the X[R] pages you will see CAPITAL R, meanging X[S} is CAPITAL S even though it may not look like it size wise. XS, XR, IMO.
Where is that? XR phone isn’t available until Mid-October w/ or w/o a carrier.

You can pre-order one at the Apple store online. The first screen of buying options only includes the four standard carriers. There isn’t a “no-carrier” option as there is with the Xs.
I don’t think you can pre-order it at all until Mid October. Try clicking that button I think it goes to a “wait till mid October page”. Pre order is mid October and delivery is a week later (until those preorders max out and delivery date slips).
My confusion wasn’t about when the device would be available; it was about why there isn’t an unlocked option.
I believe the ordering site will update when it is available for pre-order. Site is just there for pricing info and not preorder on any configuration yet. Mid October when it is available for pre-order you will be able to find and preorder the unlocked version.
At this point I’m hoping we eventually get to an iPhone XX XXL. LOL
