Fascinating read. Apple’s branding path here is a puzzle.
iPhone 8, followed by iPhone X. OK, I get that. iPhone X is a new chapter. No more home button, no more Touch ID. New screen technology, new gestures.
So does the word Plus have any value in this new wave? Does the letter “s”, as in iPhone 6s, have any value?
Looking forward to Wednesday’s event.
If they continue with alternating new form factor/new internals in a two year cycle, then continuing with the “S” branding for the enhanced internals year phones makes sense.
Regular and “plus” size applied to the old, 16:9 aspect ratio phones. I
can see them deciding they need a new word that means “bigger” to apply
to the new X-but bigger form factor, and “max” does the job.
Yes, in combination it looks stupid. People made fun of “iPad” back in 2010, with jokes about menstrual products, and now everyone just accepts it. So I can see them going with XS-Max.
I am, however, wondering what the 2019 phones will be called – XI? 11? “X” is cool. But XI? Roman numerals stopped being cool a long time ago. 11, well, you want your model numbers to be small and simple. Five or ten years from now, who’s going to be able to remember whether they have an iPhone 15 or an iphone 17? My guess is, next year they start over with a new nomenclature.
I have this question: How many iterations will it be until it become the 5G iPhone Xi2020, or XiT
PlusPhone iSX, obvs.
iPhone X -> Xs -> X2 -> X2s
Or Apple decides to not increment the model numbers anymore and just call it iPhone X from here on out.
I remember when the iPhone was unveiled, the Internet was full of comments remarking what a stupid name it was.
iPhone Xs Max => iPhone X Smax => iPhone Smax

Yes, although “iPhone Smax” is at least easy to say. “iPhone XS Max” is a (ridiculous) mouthful, even if you say “10-S.”
