Apple prepares users for end of Back to My Mac

Back to My Mac will not be available on macOS Mojave. You can get ready now by learning about alternatives for file access, screen sharing, and remote desktop access.

An alert popped up on my Mac this morning warning that the Back to My Mac service was ending soon and linked to a support article on Apple’s Web site. It’s too bad, I really enjoyed the service, but it’s not like you don’t have options—Apple details everything in the support document.

  1. You got a popup warning? How did that happen?
Well now I have to fire up my old headless systems to set up VNC or something. I hope they didn’t kill Remote Disc, my old G4 Windtunnel is the only DVD drive I own.

  2. TeamViewer is an excellent alternative for remote access. It’s free for non-commercial use. ARD is the best remote access program for Macs provided you are on the same network or have VPN access to the box.

  3. I don’t see how Screen Sharing can substitute BTMM. On the contrary, Screen Sharing, File Sharing, or Remote Session all benefit from BTMM in order to access to this services running on Macs behind NAT routers. Without BTMM other third-party solutions (such as Edovia’s Screens Connect) are needed, or an VPN must be configured, which is not an easy task for the average user.
