The iMac is the machine that famously saved Apple back in 1998 —but it didn’t stop there. Rarely standing still, it has kept at the forefront of Apple design, yet today’s iMac has the same design goals it always has. AppleInsider looks back at the beginning of the line, all the way to today.
I still remember the first time I saw the iMac in real life at the 1998 Macworld Expo in New York City. I watched Apple techs set up several dozen of them in Apple’s booth at the Javits Center ahead of the Steve Jobs Keynote. I will always maintain that the iMac saved Apple. Without it, the company wouldn’t have survived long enough to accomplish all the amazing things it did in the ensuing years and we would all be the poorer for it.
Ah, the Bondi blue iMac. I went out an bought one as soon as it became available. I still remember driving far afield because the local CompUSA didn’t have them. Back then you had to go to the back of the store where the neglected and poorly maintained Mac ghetto was. The guy seemed mildly baffled that I wanted to buy what was clearly a toy. I think it was one of my favorite computers ever. It doesn’t run any more, but I still have it. My Powerbook 100 and Powerbook Duo are way up on that list too though.
I saved enough for a new iMac Pro for later this year.

Probably the most consistently evolved ‘Mac’ of Apple’s lineup, save the iPhone. Always been a fan (not so much with the “hockey puck”).
I think the iMP should include a keyboard with Touch Bar. But maybe Apple’s waiting to roll that out with their eagerly anticipated MacPro update.
Someone had to kill the RS232/422 port and the floppy disk…
Might be difficult to get the full Touch Bar (Touch ID!) experience on a non-integrated USB device without security issues, maybe.
(Bar for UI without TouchID would be more plausible, for sure, though that would complicate UX with inconsistency…)
