iOS 12 beta 5 confirms HomePod will add support for making phone calls

A while back, on this episode of The Dalrymple Report, Jim and I argued about whether HomePod should be allowed to make phone calls. Bad news, Jim, looks like that day is coming.

  1. It’s also not bad news, it’s good news. If one doesn’t want to use it for phone calls, turn it off (or, rather, simply don’t turn it on). Done.

But, as it stands, the HomePod, hardware-wise, is possibly the best speakerphone money can buy. It has amazing microphones that hear you if you speak normally over very loud volumes, and it has excellent audio quality. WiFi, not Bluetooth, means you can literally roam all over the room, or even not have your phone with you, and not worry about drop-outs. To arbitrarily limit it would just be lame, especially since we have Continuity to support this use case between all /other/ Apple devices.

I’m looking forward to this; I just wish I had more HomePods everywhere so that I could always have a top-tier speakerphone, not just in the family room. I’d also love it if it could support multiple phones in a future release.
