I went to Best Buy and the salesman tried to break a MacBook

What it’s like shopping for a new Mac at Best Buy. The slamming it down thing? Don’t try this at home.

  1. I made the mistake of clicking through before realizing it was ZDNet. So the writer isn’t having any functional problems with his existing Mac. He’s just bored with its appearance. To a degree that an editor decided his feelings merited an article. And his salesman sounds like a caricature.

Speaking of Best Buy (and Shawn’s recent Bloomberg-linked post about their turnaround), we were at a local Best Buy the other day to show my father-in-law how Chromebooks work (because we figure he can do less damage to himself on one of those than on a new Windows machine). The kid who answered our questions and showed us the OS was polite, helpful, and not at all intrusive. That alone was a pleasant change from the store’s rep.

I asked him about the pressure to earn sales commissions, and he told me that they don’t work on commission. Yes, there’s pressure to make a sale, but not one based on needless persuasion to clear a specific SKU.

Both he and the checkout clerk (we bought one for ourselves so we can answer f-i-l’s questions once he gets set up) asked us if we were certain that a Chromebook was genuinely what we needed. Quite surprising.

They weren’t simply trying to make a quick sale on something inappropriate that would likely be returned after the fact; they were trying to determine the consumer’s need. At east in that department.

    Two thumbs up.

  2. That might’ve been true in the past, but the kid who helped us said it wasn’t the case for him.

  3. Right, I’m not doubting you, sorry, just saying I had a misunderstanding. glad to clear it up. Still, my experience with them is that they’re a bit too aggressive which no doubt is all about the particular employee and store.

  4. No worries. And, agreed; my experience the other day was only one moment in one store. In one department, for that matter.

    Thanks!
