Silicon Valley self-driving startup Drive.ai said on Monday it will launch a pilot program for an autonomous ride-hailing service in July in Frisco, Texas, with safety drivers present.
I honestly don’t know how I feel about this. I know that autonomous vehicles are here to stay and will become more prevalent in the coming years, but sometimes I think it may be too soon. That said, riding in an autonomous vehicle is probably safer than a human driver in a lot of ways. I think it would be fascinating to get in a car and just have it drive away.
It is a MUST that that they add a feature (Tesla should be forced to as well) like Cadillac added to their auto driver system. With the Cadillac, you have to have your eyes on the road for the system to remain engaged. If you look away to read your phone or something, the system gives a loud warning and proceeds to disengage, requiring you to resume control.
Much like being an all night security guard at a warehouse where nothing ever happens, it’s all but impossible to continually pay attention to the road when nothing is required of you. Until these systems are foolproof, and that will be sometime, they have to implement systems that force the safety drivers and owners to keep engaged with the road.
It is too soon, because we have nothing significant in place to transition the workers who are going to lose whatever such jobs they might still have to this technology.
Also, telling former drivers to learn how to code ain’t gonna cut it.
Sadly your empathy or common sense is not widely shared.
If you have to pay complete attention the whole time then why even bother? Why not just drive yourself?
Well , it is AI, it got to learn.
