Texture, the magazine subscription service that Apple purchased back in March, plans to shut down its Windows app at the end of June. Users were informed of the discontinuation this week through emails and a note inside the app, which said that after June 30th, “this app will stop working and will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store.” Texture’s Android, Amazon Fire, and iOS apps will still be supported.
Makes sense.
It does—and I really don’t care about a Windows version—but it’s an odd situation we’re in RE the service itself. I’m a Texture subscriber in Canada and have NO idea what will happen down the road. If it folds into the News app will we FINALLY get it here? Or will this just disappear into the app’s country-limited limbo. I can’t get over the fact that we’re 3 years in and we still can’t get News in Canada…
Oh interesting fact while we’re at it (which may explain the situation): I’m part of a photography collective that publishes on the News app (irony). In our last issue one of our stories had text in French (phototographer lives in France). I received an email from Apple telling me it would be deleted due to language guidelines not being respected. Needless to say I wrote back..mildly annoyed. It’s a NEWS app. But it does explain why we don’t have access to the app in our country I guess. Ridiculous if you ask me.
Honestly it’s not worth stressing about. We have News in Australia and I have tried very hard to like it and use it. But Flipboard is still better imo.
To me News is a bit like a RSS reader / collected bookmarks. It seems to just show you stories from sources you give it. Flipboard is much better at showing me stories from sources I don’t know about but are of interest to me – and not the same story 5x over from different sources.
