Recode survey: Amazon has most positive impact on society of any major tech company

In a nutshell, the survey’s top 3:

– Amazon, 20%
– Google, 15%
– Apple, 11%

The survey was implemented by SurveyMonkey.

What I’d really love to see is some detail on people’s thinking on this. What is the positive impact from Amazon? Is it about getting goods so quickly and reliably? Amazon Echo and Alexa? Something else?

And is Google’s positive mostly about search?

I also wonder if Apple would have won this survey hands down 8 years ago, when the iPhone was still exploding but Android hadn’t quite taken off yet. Interesting.

  1. Nothing says “positive impact” to people like low prices (Amazon) and free (Google). That’s your metric right there. Never mind the negative impact those have on society. High cost of low prices indeed.

  2. Gotta love people saying Amazon, with its awful labor practices, and Google, embroiled in its own privacy scandal like Facebook, have a positive impact on society. Also, Facebook is only 1% below Apple. This is depressing.

  3. Let’s measure Amazon’s carbon footprint on the planet and then see how ‘positive’ they are.

  4. I’ve read all the press about Amazon’s terrible labor practices, but I have a friend who actually works in one of their distribution centers and she loves her job. She’s been there for years now. Good pay and the work isn’t hard. So, take the reports with a grain of salt.

  5. I’m glad your friend loves her job and is treated well. I doubt all of Amazon’s working facilities are awful, but there are repeated stories over the years that keep pointing to awful working environments. I live in Cincinnati, and Amazon is a huge employer here. It does not have a good reputation, to put it very mildly.

  6. Google Maps is pretty great. And Android is the dominant OS for the developing world and the poor in developed markets.
