The world’s last male northern white rhino has died, the Kenyan conservancy taking care of it said, leaving only two females of its subspecies alive in the world, although scientists still hope to save it from extinction through in vitro fertilization.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy said it had made the decision with wildlife officials to put down the 45-year-old rhino named Sudan on Monday because of a rapid deterioration in his condition.
Reading this story this morning made me incredibly sad. These are magnificent animals and we are hunting them to extinction. Check out the trailer for an upcoming documentary about Sudan – The Last Male Standing.

Try hunted them to extinction. It’s extremely unlikely that we’ll be able to establish a viable population from two females and one male.
There is a much worse crime going on in Sudan – The Sudanese government’s systematic pogrom of the region of Darfur.

My wife and I were discussing this last night. It’s heartbreaking. What an idiotic species we are to hunt magnificent animals like this to extinction to make a couple of bucks on their horns for bullshit magical properties.
If the animals of the world are looking for some form of karmic justice, they can take solace in the fact we’re likely to do it to ourselves one day too.
In this case, a *dead* male, whose frozen sperm would be used to impregnate his daughter and *granddaughter*.
They’re functionally extinct.
we can thank chinese superstition for this and other similar situations (shark fin, tiger penis, etc). it’s all ground into powder and sold as woo.
it all serves as a great reminder to the anti-regulation crowd that it doesn’t work, people are stupid enough to kill the golden goose as they select personal gain over greater good. the tragedy of the commons…

I should have put Africa there, not Sudan.
Sudan is a pariah nation, that piece could have not came out of it.
Conservationists are in danger in throuout Africa.
And the spread of the Sahara is a consequence.
It bothers me that the killing of millions is ignored in that part of Africa.
