We all know what the scrambling cartoon caveman in The Flintstones sounds like, or the sound of a cartoon roadrunner sticking out his tongue. But these classic cartoon sounds don’t exist in real life. Where do they come from? How did somebody settle on a sound that’s so different from anything in the real world?
I love this video. These cartoon sound effects are as familiar to me as my own voice.
Independent of sound effects, I always preferred Warner Brothers (Chuck Jones) to Hanna and Barbera and their team. HB were good, but WB had something on them IMHO. Then there’s Max Fleishcher (Betty Boop) who was so far out ahead of his time it’s mind blowing.
Chuck M. Jones just might be the most significant influence on my childhood and life long view of culture.
I align all the great Warner directors as (personally) equally important. Jones’ predecessors did some killer comedy, too. He stood on their shoulders and did more great stuff.
