Matthew Roberts (the guy who posts those monthly Apple Park drone construction videos):
A drone crashed into Apple Park over the weekend. The drone pilot got in touch with me shortly after the incident to inquire if I could assist in locating the downed drone. I was happy to oblige, so I took a Phantom 4 Pro out and began searching for it. It was eventually located on the Solar Roof and appeared to be intact for the most part.
The drone operator has gotten in touch with Apple and notified them of the drone crash and it remains to be seen, whether the operator will get his crashed drone back.
The video has (very choppy) footage of the drone going down. When I first saw this, I was reminded of all those times I knocked on neighbors doors to get back baseballs, footballs, and frisbees that landed in their yard or on their roof. Never a drone though.

Will be interesting to see if Apple charges him for damages. Drones are heavy (I have one), and they could definitely hurt a solar panel. Mine once lost power for no reason and plunged 200 feet straight down. Luckily it just hit the grass in my front yard.
It will be interesting to see what happens. I don’t know if Matthew Roberts had Apple’s permission to fly over the building or not. If he did, he might be OK. Either way, since the job is pretty much done, we may have seen the last of these videos.
It will be interesting to learn Apple’s response.
My understanding is that property ownership does not confer any rights regarding the use of the air space directly above. Once down, however, it’s obviously a different story.
Rights aside, I think a short and sweet letter from Apple would probably do the trick. Something along the lines of “here’s your drone, sign here”.
I understood that Matthew Roberts had found the drone for the person who lost it, not lost it himself.
yeah making public videos about your crashed drone likely aren’t going to help — for the same reason we don’t publically negotiate with terrorists. everybody else will want the same treatment. discretion, boys.
They should ask that dude to come and pick up his drone and then slap handcuffs on him before they take him to the county jail. I never realized they were flying directly over the buildings. I just thought they were just using telephoto lenses for those closeup shots.
Well that would really depend, wouldn’t it? If the drone didn’t do any damage then Apple wouldn’t have any leverage at all aside from the minor question of whether or not to return it.
Under what conditions does Apple have any leverage here, and how much?
FYI, drones don’t actually exist. Nor do telephoto lenses.
