Seems to me, “damage” implies permanence. As far as I can tell, the rings left by HomePod, etc., are like smudges. A bit of mayo (or whatever cleaning miracle you use for your wood surfaces) and elbow grease, and it’s all cleaned up.
Or put something solid under the speaker to prevent the ring in the first place.

Well, no duh? We had some furniture made last year and this is why it’s finished with varathane.
Also, apparently if you hide your HomePod behind a curtain it doesn’t work as well. Ask David Pogue. Bet they get wet when submerged in water. And how well do they survive a house fire? And there is no Accessibility setting for deaf people. Clearly a poorly thought out product, released too soon.

so does spotify + home pod. ive never, ever used siri voice control to use my Music app. browsing music and playlists is normal to me. i beam back to my existing AirPlay wifi speaker, which cost me 300 bucks and doesnt do jack or sound very good.
that would be a terrible waste of resources. most people dont have oiled wood “living finish” pieces, and if they do, they know they have to protect them from objects in the world.
Sorry but Apple Music works in every situation, even when you’re running.
You are aware that oiled wood surfaces can be marred by a lot more than just silicone, right?
Owners of this type of furniture are supposed to be aware of this, and use tablecloths/coasters/etc. if they want to take care of their furniture.
But, since this is Apple, its usually always Apple’s fault or some accusation of “poorly thought out” etc.
I couldn’t stop shaking my head at David Pogues “results.”
Because curtains makes a lot more sense than blindfolding someone.
Fair enough. I very likely overreacted because I’ve grown to expect more from them. Hoping Apple can still somehow control whatever -gate this turns into.
I have numerous Apple products (Airport, ATV, iMacs, MBPs, Thunderbolt Displays, etc.) and none have left a mark or residue on my stained wood furniture.
It’s reasonable to expect that the HomePod won’t ‘damage’ your wood furniture either.
So why this product, why now?
Do you have a HomePod that has marred that same furniture?
Stained isn’t the same as oiled. Other folks have said their AirPorts do the same thing — the feet absorb some of the oil from the surface. They also said their kitchen counter appliances do the same, which is why they must occasionally re-treat the surface.
You probably don’t have any living finishes, but I do. Being aware of how objects in the world interact with it, and normal treatment and restoration practices are needed is part of the deal when you have nice materials.
It’s not new.
You’re worried about a problem you don’t have. “But Apple!”
Honestly, this whole story is so dumb and makes me wonder how modern people survive. There’s a reason my mom always told us to not put ANYTHING on her furniture without something under it. There’s also a reason why she waxed her tables every week, and why Pledge was a household name.
Or we could teach Grade 6 science to adults.

Yup. Perception is everything. If you see the HomePod as a speaker, it’s great. If you see it as a virtual assistant, not so much.
There’s a good chance that HomePod won’t mar that same furniture. It didn’t happen to every wood.
If anyone bothered to completely read the AppleInsider story on this, they actually talked to woodworking experts, and it was explained that this is a reaction that occurs with cheap silicone based polishes people use, like Pledge. Silicone polishes being exactly what wood experts warn people against using, because they create these sorts of problems, and refinishing problems.

But AirPlay blocks the playback on the device you’re streaming from. And since more and more website, even on mobile, have autoplay video or ads, the experience using Airplay as your main source for feeding the HomePod isn’t great.
