TidBITS:
In case you ever doubted Facebook’s commitment to hoovering up as much information about you as it can, the company has come under fire for a change in the Facebook app for iOS in the United States. In the last few days, users have discovered a new option when you tap the hamburger button to access your pages, shortcuts, and settings. In that screen is a section called Explore that lets you get to a vast number of Facebook services, such as On This Day, Crisis Response, Live Videos, Find Wi-Fi, and Device Requests. There are so many, in fact, that the last one is Show More, and tapping that displays another 11, including the reassuringly named Protect.
Our recommendation: If you use the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad, don’t get suckered into installing Onavo Protect.
Facebook once again goes above and beyond to prove they are one of the sleaziest companies in America.
I honestly believe Facebook is a bigger threat to freedom and democracy than any terrorist group.
Even if they disappeared tomorrow, I’m fairly certain another willing conduit would spring right up to enable foreign election interference.
Facebook is scuzzy, but imagine if Uber gets ahold of this idea …. VPN by Uber would probably route all your traffic through Travis Kalanick’s phone.
You’re right, of course. It’s like a new type of virus. Easily replicated, able to mutate, and potentially deadly to its host, which in this case is any society open enough to allow it to exist.
And if you can appeal to their worst fears and deepest prejudices, especially with legitimate-sounding rhetoric, you’ve written yourself a new national anthem for millions to recite.
Sure. But you don’t need to find anybody’s deepest fears and prejudices. You only need to find tiny fears and prejudices, and compound them over time. The smallest nudge compounded a thousand times will turn anybody into a completely different person, as long as you can find a way to make them receptive, which is exactly what Facebook does.
