WhatsApp used Apple emojis on Android for years, and only recently created its own emoji set for use on Android and the web. Slack, too, offered Apple emojis on all platforms until today.
Whether these changes were due to pressure from Apple, or a growing realisation that this might not be the right way to go about cross-platform use, we don’t know for sure.
Other apps such as Signal and Telegram continue to use Apple emojis on Android.
That’s Android. How about using Apple emoji in your iOS app?
Last week app developer Sam Eckert reported that an update to his iOS app BitTracker was rejected by Apple due to lack of compliance with its guidelines for trademarks and copyrights.
Specifically, emoji use in BitTracker was called out as being problematic in both the iPhone app, and a small ? Chart Decreasing emoji used in the watchOS app was also an issue.
Jeremy goes on to show more examples of app rejection, and Apple’s inconsistency in using emoji in their own teaching materials.
At the very least, Apple is sending mixed signals. It’d be good to have a clear sense of what will fly and what won’t in terms of using Apple emoji in your own app.
This is so freaking stupid and a prime example of a someone in the legal department running amok.
What’s next, is Apple going to start banning apps for using system fonts? So sorry, the letters A P L and E are not permitted to be used in your app?

Or rather, Apples emoji art is trademarked and owned by Apple. It is not the default art for emoji, as it has pretty much become. They’ve probably been turning a blind eye when it comes to seeing their artwork in iOS apps, but it is probably infuriating seeing Apples IP within Android apps.
Yea, it seems trivial. But if you don’t enforce your trademarks, then you lose ownership. This is probably Apples best option, without looking like the big bad Apple.
From a practical POV, Emoji are a font installed on the device. If you aren’t permitted to use the fonts that are preinstalled on the device in your apps for that device, what the hell?
Yea I know, but like I said this is probably Apple’s best option without having to threaten developers with legal actions if they don’t remove it from the Android apps.
If they discourage the practice altogether on their own platform, rather than threatening legal action, it will work itself out without Apple looking like the bully.
