Much the way emotions live inside every person, a script lives inside every movie, helping shape it, direct it, give it life. Scripts form a superstructure around which films are built. But the execution of a scene can diverge wildly from what’s in the script, for better and for worse.
In a new video released by Pixar, viewers can compare the script-to-screen execution of one of Inside Out’s most memorable scenes. It’s a master class in how direction and acting can give a scene strength it doesn’t have on the page.
Even those of us who love movies may not realize the process from page to screen. I’ve read lots of movie scripts that don’t have any real excitement to them. It’s not until they become film that the beauty is revealed.
Screenwriting is a art that I’d be hard-pressed to learn. And their worth isn’t always immediately obvious. I’ve read a bunch of scripts for stage, tv, and screen. At least one of the best of them took several read-throughs to actually create scenes in my head that involved me.
I love your spin here. (Not sarcastic. I know, weird for me.)
Read the Bourne Identity script.
Acting should be in quotes here, shouldn’t it? Unless computer animated actors is sort of the new “I read that [audio]book”.
I’ll go looking for it. It takes a bit of flair to convey visual excitement in written stage directions. Harlan Ellison did it so well that directors resented him for encroaching on their turf.
Great animators have always acted out their characters, way before CG replaced ink and paint.

Amy Poehler is an actor without quotes. I may have been looking at an animated character but she was the one who brought tears to my eyes.
That’s totally fair. I’m not entirely persuaded, but I understand the points being made.
Many thanks.
