Andrew O’Hara, iDownloadBlog, jumped through the hoops necessary to test out the beta version of AirPlay 2 using multiple Apple TVs, each running their latest betas.
Watch the video below. This is especially timely, given the fact that we’re just a few weeks away from our first public HomePods and the importance of AirPlay to the HomePod experience.
Given that AirPlay has been extremely buggy with no signs of getting better for years, I don’t have much confidence in Apple’s ability to execute here.

Do you only do music? I’ve always had horrible results trying to get anything to AirPlay onto my Apple TV. It will take a long time to load, often cut off in the middle and refuse to reconnect, or stay connected and interfere with my normal Apple TV viewing. It may be that I’ve simply given up and haven’t tried in a long time as well. Other hardware and setup issues may come in to play, like my wifi router or the fact that I’m on the previous gen Apple TV, not the current 4k version.
I thing your router is faulty. Try use Apple AirPort.

Never had any problems with AirPlay, using either Apple routers or other routers. I’d check your router for sure. If it won’t deliver peer-to-peer packets reliably it’s not of much good.

Say I have an apple TV with apple music set up and have an airplay speaker. If I select this speaker to airplay to from my iPhone, will it still play music if I turn my iPhone off? If not will there be a way to tell siri (from my watch or iPhone) to play a song to an airplay 2 speaker from apple tv? If apple TV is playing music to an AirPlay 2 speaker can it still play video/audio to my TV?
Use 5GHz WiFi for AIrPlay Mirroring & Audio streaming.
Use 2.4 Ghz for AirPlaying Video on the web ,Apple TV can access.
I personally do not have any issues on AirPlay. I have been using it since 2014.
I’ve got Apple Wi-Fi using 5GHz and I get Airplay drop outs from iTunes on Mac to Airport Express. Also sometimes can’t connect at all. I find using BT audio to an Anker speaker and Amazon Echoe more reliable than Airplay.
Oh! Damn, I forgot my old AirPort Express. No idea about the current one, but I retired my old one because I just couldn’t trust it. It’s been unsupported for some time in any case.
One problem we discovered on our networks was that the AppleTV prioritizes new connections. One of the very popular Android streaming packages (sorry, I don’t remember which) would poll the network trying to connect to AppleTVs. Each time it knocked on an AppleTV with active streaming, the streaming would switch over to the Android streaming package (which would then promptly hang up).
I reported it to the streaming package vendor but they didn’t care. Our Android users disabled that part of the packages and our problems ended.
