Spotify pays most of its revenue to the labels to license music rights. The labels then pay a small amount of that money to artists. In the age of record pressing, compact disc encoding, physical distribution, and the like, such a middle man was needed. Today, that middle man seems, well, antiquated. The labels, of course, will say they do far more than this, and maybe they do — for now. But come on, this middle man is so getting cut out of the equation at some point.¹
And Spotify, more so than any company before it — aside from maybe Apple (more on that in a bit) — is in a position to do just that. Of course, they can’t come out and say this — though it sure sounds like Jimmy Iovine did recently (again more in a bit) — because it would be declaring open war on their most important partners. But this is inevitable: Spotify will work with artists directly to produce and distribute their music, becoming, effectively, a label.
It’s hard to argue with the logic. It’s just a matter of time.
The labels have done this to themselves…I am surprised this has not happened sooner.
Tidal has been making this their goal from the beginning. Considering Spotify’s spotty record, I’d bet on Apple and Tidal doing a better job.
I think this has to, and will happen. I wouldn’t doubt if Apple and Spotify are already scouting for the next wave up up and comers to sign. The existing labels will be furious, but they won’t be able to do anything about it because there’s no place else to sell their music. And who knows… maybe in this new world, musicians will be given some creative freedom and maybe earn a better living. OK, that’s probably not gonna happen, but I can dream!

I think this will end up more like Amazon publishing than like Netflix originals. Isn’t most of what label provide on the technical and marketing side? The ones most able to do it alone already run their own labels (e.g. Taylor Swift) or get favorable deals from the big labels. This also ignores the entire live side of the music business. Right now, the live side is where musicians make most of their money. Apple and Spotify are poorly set up to deal with that side.
Apple has more experience with the live side than Apple, if only because of the iTunes Music Festival. (Though they could also just hire whoever they wanted; their massive pile of cash is quite useful for expansions such as this one)
Er, is Tidal’s record all that clear of spots? I don’t know of anybody that uses it. (Though I admit that evidence is circumstantial at best)
