The reports of the power of this iMac make it not only droolworthy (I wish I could justify getting one) but it gets me thinking – how incredible will the promised 2018 Mac Pro be?

I’m a Graphic and Web Designer currently running two still-stout but aging Mac Pros – and the iMac Pro is certainly droolworthy – and more costly than the MPs when they were new. I hope to upgrade the boxes till I can’t any more… but the architecture is now no longer supported by Apple and does not support advanced Mac OS features such as AirDrop.
But if the iMac Pro covers the needs of a respectable chunk of the neglected Pro market, that eases the incentive for Apple to move forward on developing a modular Mac Pro with user accessible features, like RAM, HD/SSDs, graphics cards, PCI slots, etc. Apple’s arc has been NON user upgradable everything… and the further away from the iPhone you get in the product line, the less interest Apple seems to have. They do seem to like the idea of their devices being Magical “black boxes” full of rainbow sparkles and unicorn farts.
I am not going to hold my breath waiting for a New New Mac Pro. ( Or an updated Mac Mini, either )
Aren’t the processor needs similar?
I expect a Mac Pro that allows user configuration in some way, but I have doubts we’ll ever see another Mac tower whose guts are fully user accessible.
I wish I could say I trust Apple to update the mini line.

it‘s not the „promised 2018“ macpro, they just said in 2017 that it‘s going to take longer than a year to develop. imho, the imac pro looks like an upgrade path for nMP owners who can‘t wait for the new nMP, which makes me doubt that we‘ll see a nnMP this year.
Anyway, I hope it‘ll be a souped up mac-mini, maybe with multiple, stackable mac-mini-lookalike-components connected with a (new) external bus connector. And I hope they don’t pull an iphoneX / MBP 2016 and it‘ll start well below the imac pro. Remember, the nMP starts at € 3,4k and imho there‘s even room below for a „pro“ machine that is not a throwaway-all-in-one-imac but also does not need workstation-class cpus (e.g. intel‘s 8700k cpu seems to fall between the imac pro‘s 8-core and 10-core processor, when it comes to soeed, but also got intel‘s quicksync, which should make it significantly faster when working with h.264 or hvec videos).

but, don‘t worry about not having airdrop – it doesn‘t work most of the time anyway. otoh, you can still rock fat nvidia cards.
