Ahead of the promised “early 2018” launch of the HomePod, Apple has received official FCC approval for the smart speaker. Now that FCC approval has been obtained, Apple is free to begin selling the device at any time.
I can’t wait to try out the HomePod.
I wonder if a typical mall-sized Apple store will make it possible to even hear one being demo-ed.
When I bought my iPhone/Bose speaker, I tested it against another manufacturer in the Apple Store. The difference was such the I paid almost twice for the Bose as the other speaker was going for.
If the speaker operates as the HomePod is described you’ll be able to tell the difference.
I know I’m getting one because of the sound, and the ability to stream sound originating on the AppleTV. The monies saved by not getting a sound bar make the HomePod very reasonable.
Looking forward to its release, will finally be able to assess the voice activate smart speaker market properly before deciding on a purchase.

I have an audiobook, “The Day of the Triffids”. On my iPad I tell Siri, “Play Day of the Triffids”. She parses my words accurately (for a change) and says, “Okay, here’s ‘Day of the Triffids'” … and then she shows me the movie of that name. If I have to control the HomePod entirely with my iPhone (summoning the audiobook in iBooks then hitting play), it’s no better than a bluetooth speaker to me.
Good stress test for a guy with a couple of rambunctious kids wondering if it’ll work in his house though. ???.
Are you going to get two for stereo separation? I’ve got a pretty decent JBL soundbar that didn’t cost more than a pair of HomePods.
You’re not wrong.
very curious too. it‘s a product i definitely don‘t need in my house – everywhere where there should be music, there is music, and i’ve got a passable BOplay bluetooth speaker for carrying around if i want to listen to something in the bathtub or on the balcony. still, i‘m wrecking my brain to find a justification for me to buy this thing…
it won‘t make a difference with audiobooks, but the airplay on the homepod should offer better quality than bluetooth-streaming. plus it‘s supposed to adapt to the room it‘s in.
as it seems priced like compareable bluetooth speaker, maybe even a bit less, it does not necessarily have to be even „better“ then.
Does great sound quality count for much if Siri isn’t finding what you’re asking her to play?
