The firm’s Alpha bike runs for about 100 km (62 miles) on a two-litre tank of hydrogen, a range similar to an electric bike, but a refill takes only minutes while e-bikes take hours to charge. One kilo of hydrogen holds about 600 times more energy than a one-kilo lithium battery.
The bikes are really expensive, and the charging stations even more expensive, but they do plan to bring these to the consumer market in the coming years.
So, quick refills for a fuel that requires electricity to create, plus the new need for pressurized storage?
Hydrogen power used to seem like an interesting alternative, back when I was 14 and reading Popular Science. But with modern electric vehicles steadily improving, this now sounds like an unnecessary added step in the energy chain made convenient for affluent people.
I’ve lived in and traveled to cities with public bike rental programs — big racks with a kiosk. If the recharge time is only a minute it may mean a better solution for that use case.
Batteries will improve. Will hydrogen? 😉
“1 kilo of hydrogen holds more energy than 1 kilo of lithium ion batteries” — are they including the weight of the hydrogen storage in that fact? those bottles aren’t light.
i’m not exactly unbiased here since i drive an electric car, but one thing i’ve discovered is i charge overnight at home 99% of the time. heck i’ve delayed putting a level 2 charger at home because 120v is working for me. takes 8 hours to charge from 50% with 120v but i don’t care, i’m sleeping the whole time. So unless the range is way shorter than your daily trips, or you always come back to your own charging station between trips, i don’t see a benefit.
