One of the most original and distinctive songs Led Zeppelin ever recorded was the exotic, eight-and-a-half minute “Kashmir,” from the 1975 album Physical Graffiti. In this clip from Davis Guggenheim’s film “It Might Get Loud”, Jimmy Page explains the origins of the song to fellow guitarists Jack White and The Edge. Then Page demonstrates it by picking up an old modified Danelectro 59DC Double Cutaway Standard guitar that he played the song with on some of Led Zeppelin’s tours.
One of the best music documentaries I’ve ever seen is “It Might Get Loud” – Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge just sitting around, talking about playing guitar – and this segment of Page talking about one of the most distinctive riffs in music is a great example of it.
duh duh duh, duh duh duh…duh duh duh, duh duh duh…duh duh duh, duh duh duh…duh duh duh, duh duh duh…
best Zep tune
A friend of mine back in the 70s was in a punk band in Ontario. He used to say he didn’t like Led Zeppelin because Page was such a sloppy guitar player.
Seems to me he was missing the point. Page is so good. And Led Zeppelin was the greatest rock and roll band in history. Period.
My strongest memory of this song is of the roughly eight to ten minutes it took my first roommate to park his car once we arrived at our apartment after a grueling day of work. Neighborhood parking was scarce, as usual.
Kashmir was on the radio as we made our way around several blocks, over and over again. Finally found a spot near the end of the song. He switched off the ignition. An older friend from work who was in the car (picture a fussy, grumpy C3PO-sounding librarian-type with a posh Bostonian accent) piped up and said “I seriously hope we never have to hear that song, ever again.”
My roommate and I laughed our asses off. Threepio just blinked.
