When my phone is in my pocket, I tend to hold it like a gadget security blanket, and I sometimes end up squeezing the side buttons. This was never a problem until I got the iPhone X, which has some new features tied to those side buttons. More specifically, if you press and hold both the power button and a volume button for a few seconds, your phone will call 911 and/or your designated emergency contacts.
I’ve never done this, but a friend of mine had an iPhone X in a car phone mount and it slid down during the drive, pushing both buttons, and automatically called 911.
ive done similar — because the accessibility magnifier is three clicks of the side button, but if you mess up and click it 5 times? rape alarm and 911. it’s loud. doesnt seem like a great for a feature to be used while reading the menu in a cozy dark restaurant…
I had this happen once in my pocket and was just barely able to cancel it before it called 911. Maybe I should get looser jeans or some with bigger pockets. 🙂
Just last week I had my iPhone 8 on my car mount that squeezes the sides. It slid down a bit to where the pressure was on the side buttons and it sent an SOS to all my emergency contacts. I don’t think it called 911 though. I’ve never had this happen before, not sure if it’s just my car mount grip getting weak and letting it slide, or any update to their software that made it easier to do.

And when he had a wreck moments later trying to grab the phone, that 911 call seemed providential 😉
Well the click 5 times option has been changed on the X and 8 to press and continue to hold both side button and either volume button.
And if you all remember, Apple changed it to this after the whole Face ID/Touch ID and law enforcement hysteria before the X launched. Craig specifically said, “we are going to make it even easier to access emergency SOS, which disables biometrics. Its something you could do easily while pulling your phone out of your pocket.”
I personally think the 5 clicks was a little safer. But less convenient if you wanted to disable biometrics stealthily.

I let my granddaughter play with my iPhone X on Thanksgiving. And she came running into the room with a strange look on her face. And then to my horror I saw the phone was calling 911. I hung it up as fast as I could.
Sure enough, a minute later I got a call from the Oceanside 911. I explained I let her play her barbie games on my phone and she accidentally set off 911. The person on the line just laughed and said no problem.

I did this with my iPhone 8 on Day One, while trying to get it out of the box.
The good news is I had my verification that my phone number and service was transferred to the new device. I did have a cop coming by the house to make sure it was a false alarm, though.
I’m constantly accidentally taking screen shots on my iPhoneX. They’ve offloaded way too many functions to the side buttons since nuking the home button. My first impression of the X was “Face ID rocks!” Having lived with it for a few months, it’s become my least favorite iPhone since the 3G. It’s annoyances aren’t apparent until you encounter those moments where you just want to reach out and unlock it without bringing it to your face, like when you are in the car and Siri is barking at you to unlock it when you’ve said “Hey Siri, directions to the nearest gas station.”
nope — click the side button 5 times on your X and see what happens. for added laughs, do it in a library.
