We do not typically remember [Prince] as a jazz pianist. But his facility with jazz earned him the admiration of Miles Davis, who made several efforts to collaborate with the extremely busy pop star. (They performed together only once, it seems, on New Year’s Eve, 1987 at Paisley Park.) Prince’s style, stage show, songwriting, and arranging drew from jazz of all kinds—from zoot suit-era big band to the frenetic movement of hard bop to the classically-inflected show tunes of George Gershwin. Just above see him “casually own” Gershwin’s “Summertime” during a 1990 soundcheck in Osaka, Japan.
I had no idea Prince even played piano, let alone so well. I love this video. The groove is right there, with Prince driving. Super talented.
His last concerts were even solo concerts only on the piano. He really was a good player. Witnessed something similar at soundcheck in Belgium. he taught his band how to play take 5. Amazing, jumping from player to player telling them how to play it. It was super jazzy.

He actually was a multi-instrumentalist.

Also, if I had a dollar for every time an acquaintance of mine had said “I hate jazz,” but who enjoys pop or rock artists who love (and have been influenced by) jazz… I might worry a lot less about the embezzlement of my Social Security and Medicare.

His last concert at Atalanta was a solo piano concert. There’s not a lot of good footage out there, because there was a ban on users taking videos, or even using their mobiles in the shows. We were lucky to see his last Melbourne piano concert two months before he died.
For some more of Prince’s jazz work, look up “Madhouse 8” on YouTube. Prince played all instruments except for saxaphone and flute, played by Eric Leeds. The standout for me is Prince’s drumming on this album.
Not to forget, his One Nite Alone piano album from 2002. Also on YouTube if you search for “one nite alone piano”.
What’s not to love? 🙂 My all-time favorite band falls in that category; I just saw them perform again last month.

It was planned to take those shows to Europe too… Due to terrorism they got cancelled. Still very disappointed I never got to see it.
