An interesting post by Brian Bien on Amazon fake reviews, with an example of three very different reviews of the same product, all of which had this exact sentence:
The light can be pretty bright, you can adjust it where it’ll be dim and slowly brighten 30 minutes before the alarm time.
Brian makes the point:
Amazon – who has some of the world’s most advanced ML – really needs to step up its review fraud detection game. Imagine how great the Amazon shopping experience would be if we could trust its reviews.
This is one of the great potential values of machine learning. Apple’s early machine learning frameworks focused on two specific areas: Image Recognition and Natural Language Processing. Image recognition helps pick out images of cats, or roses, or your best friend Francis from your photo library. Natural Language Processing (NLP) focuses on parsing streams of text to pull out relevant details.
The fake reviews problem is a perfect problem for NLP and machine learning. There’s really no reason Amazon can’t do better. Maybe Apple could give them a hand.
Why would Amazon try to do better ? The more there is good comments, the more people buy, the more they make money.
They do the minimum to don’t be accused of doing nothing, but they have zero interest to solve the fake recommandation issue.
And amazon don’t care about the shopping experience, else they would have stopped for a long time to scam people with message like ‘2 remaining’ on each product page…
You have a point, however product returns may cost them money.
How many purchasers will even bother to return an unsatisfactory commodity item if a refund is so low it doesn’t justify the effort?
I’ve reported cases where Amazon has a list of reviews attached to the wrong product and months later nothing has changed. I don’t think it’s one of Amazon’s priorities.
Fake reviews are easy enough to spot in many cases. Look at someone’s review history, see when they signed up, the number of reviews they’ve done and the type of items reviewed. One glowing 5-star review is always cause for suspicion, as are 5-star reviews for 6 similar products, all made by the same manufacturer.
I recently had a negative post rejected from Amazon, they dont want negative posts. The post was descriptive and within bounds.

I had no idea if they’d do anything, but complaining about their reviews without trying out their reporting system, is no more honest than a fake review.
Huh? If something doesn’t work, you get a full refund, including shipping. I had a problem with something recently, and Amazon told me to not even bother returning it. They just credited my account. It wasn’t very expensive, so I guess they figured it would cost them more to handle the return than to just write it off.
I’ve never had that happen and I’m a top reviewer on both Amazon US and UK. I’m also a Vine Voice on Amazon.com, even though I’ve never gotten anything from the program (because I’m not in the US). I’ve posted many negative reviews when something is really crappy, and not one review has been rejected. So there was something about yours that didn’t pass; maybe the language, or including links, or a number of other reasons.

There’s an item-cost below which I don’t consider it worth the time or effort, but your experience is new to me.

I had this happen as well on a plumbing product I ordered that was the wrong size. They said just keep it.
