I couldn’t know it then, but the outcome of that battle would influence the purchase decisions of many thousands, if not millions, of people seeking a good night’s sleep. It would also reveal just how thoroughly the internet and the businesses that thrived there had blurred the lines between product reviews and advertisements. All I’d wanted was a mattress, but what I got was a look at a little-known and hugely lucrative annex of e-commerce, one where the relationships can often get a little too comfy—until they’re not.
What an insane story. We’ve all heard about these “online mattress” companies – they advertise on many podcasts – but you probably haven’t given them much thought beyond that. But its as cutthroat an industry as any other.
Huh. I need a new mattress. It sure as hell will not be a Casper.
Wow. So much for alleged transparency. What a mess.
Mattress sales have been a scam for 50 years or more. The stores carry different model numbers of the same mattress to protect themselves from comparison shoppers.

Jim has taken Casper’s money as recently as ‘The Dalrymple Report 38’.
I am guessing that now the Casper brand is established, they are not allocating their advertising budget in the same way. They had no hesitation ditching affliliates, and will have no hesitation not advertising on podcasts (if they haven’t stopped already). Casper are now mainstream, so their advertising will include more television and press.
A good article, which changed my perception of them.
Casper were a regular sponsor of ‘The Dalrymple Report’ too.

Bought our two twin Caspers based on a report from Consumer Reports, not websites. Are still sleeping comfortably on them. Estimated replacement, maybe in another 5 years. And then? Consumer Reports.
Mattresses have alway been a “ragman” kind of trade. Mattress shops pop up hither and yon and have for decades. Some market to nursing homes, dormitories, hospitals, and so on. Some private label for department stores, and so on. Consumer Reports has always been my most reliable guide.
