KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out tonight with a new investor note. Kuo explains that, despite initially believing Apple might readopt fingerprint technology, it’s now likely that all 2018 iPhone models will move to Face ID and leave Touch ID in the past.
I get it. The iPhone X is the future, charting the path of the next generations of iOS devices. But there is some value in being able to unlock my iPhone without looking at it.
With Touch ID, I can extend my arm to tap my iPhone on an awkwardly placed Apple Pay terminal, use my finger to verify my identity. The angle of my phone doesn’t matter.
That said, I’ll wait for the iPhone X and Face ID experience. After all, Apple product folks have been living with Face ID. I can’t imagine they’d abandon Touch ID if it still had value.
As always, take these sorts of rumors with a grain of salt.
Makes me think of the case of Apple Watch, where I’m already authed by virtue of wearing it and having unlocked it earlier – don’t have to re-auth when paying. How Apple can get us to auth early and naturally, before it would be awkward.
Quit reporting on the mystical Ming-Chi Kuo, and the mystical correctness of his observations. We go tired of that bullshit here and decided to actually study his pronouncements for the last 3 years. He’s correct 22% of the time. You guys fall for this buyllshit all the time because you’re too lazy to check stories.
We lie in a society of product rumor new and sports bullshit inflammatory rablerousing news. No wonder people are suckers for “fake news”.
Stop it. It’s embarrassing.
Different cases. The Watch stays authorized because you don’t take it off. It assumes that it’s you who are wearing it once you put the passcode in. If you take it off for a time you’ll have to reauthorize it. The phone.. you don’t keep in contact with so it can’t assume that the person who is picking it up is the same person who put it down.

Exactly this. I don’t get why people want to render judgement until trying it.
I, for one, look forward to our Face ID universe if it works well. I’m tired of my recently-washed fingers failing touch ID. Maybe everyone else has better fingerprints, but my touch ID failure rate is around 10% (across multiple devices), and 80% if I’ve just washed my hands. I’ll probably try a retrain pass, but that’s just hassle I shouldn’t have to deal with anyway.
You seem to have gotten a lot more rude and presumptive lately.
I get it; these are frightening times for the remainder of the shrinking middle class. But aren’t there better ways to channel one’s anxiety than attacking other people who are trying to make an honest living?
