Nikkei Asian Review:
A tech executive familiar with iPhone X production told Nikkei Asian Review on Thursday that manufacturers are still struggling to perfect 3-D sensors and in particular dot projectors in Apple premium handset’s TrueDepth camera system, though the person could not pinpoint exactly the problem.

The executive’s comments were confirmed by Jeff Pu, an analyst with Taipei-based Yuanta Investment Consulting, who also identified the dot projector as the troublesome component holding back mass production of iPhone X.
Nonetheless, Pu stuck to his view voiced late September that iPhone X will enter mass production in mid-October and begin to be shipped from China in the third week of this month. He is, however, cutting his forecast of the volume of iPhone X that will be produced this year, from 40 million units to 36 million.
Is this much ado about nothing? If this is an actual problem and the issue is not resolved, will Apple push back the current preorder schedule (set for October 27th, just after midnight PDT)? That’s two weeks from today.
Keep your eye on this one.
They should stick to the schedule no matter what. Not like there is any law that says you can’t put a product out there with a 3-6 mo. delay, is there?

Apple knows how to build and ship products.
If you look at what PrimeSense was developing before Apple acquired them, they just released what was at the time “the worlds smallest 3D sensor.” I forget the name of it. But if you look at it, its essentially a logic board that is practically the same size as the iPhones entire logic board. Thats just for the 3D sensor. And that was only a few years ago.
To think that Apple miniaturized all that technology even further into something that fits within the tiny “notch” beside all the other tech inside the notch (True tone sensors, speaker, mic, 8mp camera, etc) then it truly is remarkable what Apple has done and absolutely state of the art. It would be shocking to hear that Apple WASN’T having production issues for something so remarkable.

Yes and no.
I mean, I can believe Apple had “production issues” during the development process, at some point.
But it’s been literally years, and I don’t see any reason they should still be ongoing.
I find it a lot harder to believe Apple demoed and announced a ship date without fixing those issues first.
Very good point. No doubt when you are on the cutting edge the failure rate is going to be high in the ramping up of manufacturing any product. I remember how long it took to ramp up the AirPods. In the end the highest customer satisfaction of any consumer device in history.

Apple always has yield issues when they ship brand new technology. That’s nothing new. Apple employees themselves say you’re not pushing hard enough if you don’t run into production challenges.
However, what you consider a “yield issue” and what Apple considers are 2 different things. They may achieve only a 75% yield rate, which to Apple is a massive issue when they are targeting 99% yields.
I think you’re imagining some wild problem that is preventing them from producing phones. No, thats not what it means. It means they’re only getting 75% or 80% usable parts vs 99% etc.

“perfect” is an interesting word choice and I wonder if it’s in translation because it could mean two things here. First, ‘to perfect’ it in the sense of getting it to work reliably enough at all (which would be a disaster) or second, to get reliable units produced at volume which would be bad for sales but not for user experience.

There are new, cutting edge technologies in the iPhone X that have never been in phones before. How is Apple going to avoid a bit of a challenge? And it’s not like they are going to miss the ship date. It’s just the production numbers are going to be lower as they improve manufacturing yields.
