Apple reveals new emoji for iPhone and iPad

Apple press release:

Hundreds of new emoji, including more emotive smiley faces, gender-neutral characters, clothing options, food types, animals, mythical creatures and more, are coming to iPhone and iPad with iOS 11.1.

The new emoji are gorgeous. To me, they harken back to the days of skeuomorphism. Jarring to see the shiny, shadowed, 3D emoji next to the intentionally flat iOS interface. Which way are we going?

No matter, head over to the Apple press release, check out the emoji for yourself. A vampire!

  1. Skeuomorphism is like 80’s fashions. Flat look reminds me of skinny jeans. I too wonder where we are going.

  2. I’m really confused by your assertion of skeuomorphism, Dave.

“A skeuomorph is a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues (attributes) from structures that are inherent to the original.”

Emoji are not derivative objects. They’re diagrams that literally represent the originals.

Something’s skeuomorphic if, for example, it’s got fake leather stitching but isn’t an icon of a leather book. In this case, these are beautifully drawn representations of real things.

Arguably, the flatness of iOS is to enable the user interface to be abstracted away and to let the user focus on content. Like, emoji.

  3. I love the crazy-faced emoji. Apparently he was reacting to the word “skeumorphism”, but snark aside I do love it!
