A few highlights:
Regardless of your feelings for the notch, the reality is that to do a near edge-to-edge screen on a phone in 2017; you need to make place for sensors and speaker. The technology to hide them behind the screen simply is not here. We’ve seen different manufacturers choose different solutions to the problem. This is the one Apple chose, so let’s work with what we got.
That last bit is exactly right. These are the cards we’ve been dealt. Let’s work with that.
The familiar 20 pt tall status bar, the same height it’s been since the first iPhone, is now 44 pt tall on iPhone X.
That’s more than twice the height but, of course, it’s now split in two. Not our space to play with, so no reason for developers to worry through what will fit in the so-called horns.

I’m no dev, and I’ll probably never own a X, but I still found this instructive.
Armchair critics are a useless joke. Anyone can have an opinion about something even if they don’t have any knowledge at all. Hating on the iPhone X notch is rather ridiculous. The module for the Romeo and Juliet sensors had to go somewhere and it’s in a good location. It’s certainly functional. I’m glad most consumers will accept the sensor notch and Apple will sell a decent number of iPhone X units. Those consumers who don’t like the notch won’t buy the iPhone X and that’s their choice. Most of the critics who are whining and moaning about the notch on the iPhone X had no intentions to buy the iPhone X from the get-go but they just wanted some attention to show how much influence they have over consumers.
I bought an iPhone 8 because it looks like an iPhone. The iPhone X looks like an android phone. So I will pass for the next 4 years or whatever.
