It’s easy to create an external installation drive. It’s also handy to keep around, just in case you’re in a situation where you rather use the drive than rely on booting in Recovery mode.
Here are a couple of different ways you can create a bootable macOS High Sierra installation drive.
I’ll be installing macOS High Sierra on Thursday and after I back everything up and ensuring I have a good bootable backup drive, I’ll do is this. But this line in the article:
…the download will be over 5GB, so it’ll take a few minutes.
Bugs the hell out of me. For many of us, it will take significantly longer than just “a few minutes”. I’ll be looking at over 30+ minutes just for the download.

The folks at Apple sometimes have trouble relating to third world situations.
Apparently the folks at MacWorld do as well. Lots of folks don’t have the 150Mbps download speeds to effect this download in “a few minutes.” Even Shawn’s 30+ minutes indicates a speed greater than available to many in the First World!
And what SHOULD they do? It’s an entire OS update. It’s not going to be 3meg.
If someone has truly crappy speeds at their house but there are better speeds at, say, a Starbucks nearby, go there. If you live in the boonies for real, you’re used to the fact that you have 1.5m DSL or whatever so everything is slow.
The action item here isn’t for Apple, it’s for the US (and apparently Canada) to get better connectivity to exurbs and rural locations.
Only 30 minutes? Pfft.

I live in Portugal, it took me less than 2 minutes to download, and i believe it is the same connectivity for all the territory.
A smaller country than yours of course.
Maybe send away for a stack of floppies? 😉
I remember installing a software update on a Mac SE which required a maddening amount of reinserting “floppy disks.”
I’d say, push the download button and go read the news, or sleep, or walk the dog. It’s all part of Apple’s emphasis on healthy living!
And this is where I think back to my first Mac with its 40 MB hard drive and a modem so slow that I I had the space to download a 5 GB file, I’d probably still be waiting for the download to finish today.
Microsoft Office back in the Windows 3.11 days was 36 disks. We had three sets, to minimize the chances of the same disk dying in each set to prevent us from installing because each.and.every.disk.had.to.be.read. even if not all the installer options were selected.
We literally danced for joy when we could move to CD’s.
My first mac (a Mac+ with 512k of ram) had one 800K drive.
I remember the luxurious day that I picked up an external 800k floppy drive. This meant no more disk swapping to save files, use different programs, etc. It also meant I could finally use Adobe Type Manager!! [insert choir of angels sound effect].
My first hard drive was a 30mb revelation…
