Shot-for-shot might be a bit of an overstatement, but watch the video below. Had no idea Airplane was a remake. If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s hilariously juvenile and fantastically funny. If you like that sort of thing. Lots of quotable lines, terrific sight gags.
Seeing the remake side by side with the original just makes me appreciate this comedy gem that much more.

This makes a lot of sense. There are lots of 1950s movies that pretty much parody themselves at this point.
Also, putting Peter Graves up against Leslie Nielsen was brilliant.

Ha! I bought Zero Hour on DVD several years ago to accompany Airplane!
Now I want to see Flight Into Danger (the original of Zero Hour). James Doohan, guys.
I watched Zero Hour a while ago, and the thing that amazed me most was that lines I assumed were jokes in Airplane! were fully intended to be played straight.
I also firmly believe that Airplane! is a tighter and more dramatically satisfying film than Zero Hour by being more economical with the setting and streamlining the characters (moving the therapist scene into other conversations and flashbacks, and having them be unmarried and making their kid an unrelated passanger).
