BMW (BMWG.DE) is reviewing the necessity of car keys, Ian Robertson, the company’s board member responsible for sales told Reuters.
The fact that customers now all carry a smartphone and the availability of a BMW App which allows customers to unlock their vehicle, has made old fashioned keys less relevant.
Yes and no. I get where they’re going, but there are some obvious situations where you may need a key. What if your phone runs out of battery or you lose it—now you can’t even get in your car.
Of course, when you lose your car key, you can’t get into your car, either.
Point taken about how car keys don’t depend on batteries, however.

Less relevant doesn’t necessarily mean eliminate. This is a trial balloon.
BMW is actually just following Tesla’s lead on this. The Model 3 does not ship with keys either (although the Model 3 does have a valet “key card” that can be used).
I personally don’t worry so much about running out of batteries on my phone (although I can see others might), but I heard about some people who park and then do sports, and it is easier to carry a key than a phone (especially if that sport is surfing).
I am in the queue for a Model 3, and I really hope they release an Apple Watch app for at least locking and unlocking the car.
Or maybe Touch ID placed on the door latch?
I’ve got a keyless car anyway. It’s not as bad as you’d think. When the keyfob battery is getting low, it lets me know.

It’s not only a matter of the phone battery being flat, what about if the car battery is flat? My push-button key fob holds a small “mechanical” key for emergencies.
and maybe you have a backup set of keys … having only a phone to rely one is retarded. It could save the car builder money (or allow them to reduce cost – lololol) yet can be so many more problems with a phone.
The phone “key” depends on a secure and reliably phone – lolol.

why not allow a secure and reliable watch to unlock, startup a car? also send quality keys – actual – keys — with said automobile!
why does it fail to charge wireless while in the car? Why would it even get “low”?

It’s a keyfob with a nonchargable battery. It’s not unusual. I have two anyway and it takes years to get low.

key “fobs” are still, “keys” … though maybe not as good – probably far better than relying on a phone app to work.

It’s not a “key” as in a mechanical key would be though. It is considered keyless. I don’t insert it anywhere. I leave it in my pocket and push a button to start the car.
